James Cook University (JCU) is Australia's leading tropical research university with main campuses located in the cities of Townsville and Cairns. JCU is renowned for its friendliness, good staff-student ratios, highly qualified teaching staff and effective support services.

The multimedia game development Bachelor of IT (BIT) degree was established in Cairns to take advantage of the strong creative industries presence within the region. The core curriculum based on recommendations of the International Game Developers Association has been blended with traditional studies in information technology. This assists graduates to find employment in either the specialised areas relevant to game development or the broader areas of information technology. Since its launch in 2004/2005, this program remains the only game development BIT degree accredited by the Australian Computer Society. In 2006, staff teaching the innovative Cairns based final year project subjects were recognised in the prestigious Carrick Institute Awards for Australian University Teaching.
