SEGA Studios Australia, formerly known as The Creative Assembly Australia, was founded in July 2002.
The studio was initially involved in the development of the 2002 PC title ROME: TOTAL WAR™ and gradually expanded to a team of around 70 employees. The team went on to produce MEDIEVAL II: TOTAL WAR™, which topped the UK charts in 2006 and won a number of awards (including IGN’s Best Strategy Game of E3 2006) and the expansion pack MEDIEVAL II: TOTAL WAR KINGDOMS™.
Following the release of MEDIEVAL II: TOTAL WAR KINGDOMS, the studio focussed on enhancing its technological capabilities across newly emerging hardware platforms. Releasing titles for SONY PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the Nintendo DS™ has given the studio the tools and knowledge it needs to take on its latest multiplatform title, currently in development.
To further enhance its technical prowess, the studio established a motion capture facility which has grown to become the largest in the southern hemisphere; with a number of motion capture "world's firsts" set there. The latest title in development is set to establish new benchmarks within its genre and establish SEGA Studios Australia as one of the top development studios in the southern hemisphere.
The studio has continued to strengthen its team with a view to building a studio able to explore and develop games of various genres. In December 2010 the studio rebranded to become SEGA Studios Australia.
